Sony BMG is delighted to announce the first cd in a new, exclusive partnership with the world's leading flautist, SIR JAMES GALWAY. The eagerly-anticipated cd, ‘O'Reilly Street’ is released on September 15th and sees Sir James in a thrilling collaboration with the dynamic Grammy-nominated Miami-based Cuban band, Tiempo Libre, acclaimed for its high-voltage timba music, a sizzling combination of Latin jazz and Cuban son.
Typical of Galway's innovative approach, 'O'Reilly Street' has an unusual twist in that it features music from the Claude Bolling Jazz Suites with a dynamic African Cuban beat. The cd includes Bolling's 'Baroque and Blue', an exciting new arrangement of Bach's 'Badinerie' as well as a number of vibrant new compsotions by Tiempo Libere's musical director and pianist Jorge Gomez.
The album was recorded at the Glenn Gould studio in Toronto (named after the formidable Canadian pianist, Glenn Gould 1932-82). The album's title is a nod to Tiempo Libre's Cuban origins and as a dedication to the street in Havana named after Captain Alejandro O'Reilly (1722-94), an important, Irish-born general in the Spanish army who famously helped the Cubans seize Havana back from the British who'd been occupying it for several years. As an avid history buff, Sir James was delighted to delve into a little known era of Irish/Cuban history.
SIR JAMES GALWAY is regarded as both a supreme interpreter of the classical flute repertoire and a consummate entertainer. A modern musical master, Galway’s virtuosity on the flute is equaled only by his limitless ambitions and visions. Through extensive international touring, over 50 best selling albums, tireless education programmes and frequent television performances the irrepressible Galway has endeared himself to millions worldwide.
