Maresa von Stockert studied contemporary dance at Laban and continued her studies in the US when she won a scholarship to attend Sarah Lawrence, the famous liberal arts college in Brooklyn that boasts actors, choreographers, artists and directors among its alumnae. She graduated with an MFA in Dance and Choreography in 1996 then moved to the UK to establish her own company. She has received wide recognition and a number of prestigious awards – including Time Out, Jerwood, Bonnie Bird - for her work that stands out through its combination of striking imagery, visual theatricality and a movement language that is sometimes beautifully subtle, sometimes disturbingly brutal.
Works include the critically acclaimed Grim(m) Desires, (commissioned in 2004 by The Wapping Project and the Jerwood Charity). Marjorie’s World Unhinged 2006-7 introduced spoken word, video and an original score. In 2007-8 Maresa created Glacier, a journey through a picture book of existential fears and desires inspired by personal reactions to environmental change. And in 2009 TrAPPED was a truly thought provoking journey through a world peppered with surveillance cameras and yes-men.
“Sensational choreography from Maresa von Stockert triggers countless emotions as we see the breakdown of toy German soldiers and the Berlin Wall as we delve into the East/West German divide. This is the type of contemporary dance that you can't take your eyes off, and I was trapped with them in this world right up until the curtain call.” (Three Weeks magazine).
