For its next piece, Protein Dance, led by Artistic Director Luca Silvestrini, balances the promises of an online life and the complexity of real relationships to put love, wanting and connectedness centre-stage. Developed during Choreodrome 09 at The Place, L.O.L (lots of love) will be shown as work in progress to national and international promoters at BDE2010, DanceXchange, Birmingham on 5 February. L.O.L will premiere and tour from February 2011.
PROTEIN has just completed touring DEAR BODY, Silvestrini's very funny, sharply observed take on the rapidly growing national obsession with plastic surgery. DEAR BODY follows one timid, hopeful woman's journey (Sally Marie) into the depths of cosmetic hell when she embarks on a journey to find the perfect body...she's hindered, helped and hampered along the way by David Lloyd, Vicki Manderson, Nuno Silva, Michael Spenceley, and Sally Storer who alternately bully, cajole, encourage and drag Sally into their perfect world where everyone's a monster and no one wins...
"Choreographed by Luca Silvestrini, whose precisely skewered targets have included booze culture (Publife, 2002) and consumerism (Big Sale, 2005), the piece follows a platoon of gym-rats as it stomps, pummels and snarls its way to the body beautiful. The cast includes David Lloyd, whose work-out includes auto-erotic strangulation; Michael Spenceley, for whom massage is indistinguishable from criminal assault ("I want my veins to be stretched like tyres! I'm ready!"); Vicki Manderson's dippy nutritionist who promises "happy stools, eight to 12 inches long"; Sarah Storer's hypertensive aerobics-bitch; and most gloriously extreme of all, Nuno Silva as a mad-eyed muscle queen who struts and preens like Caligula, obsessively grooming his chest hair."
